(1882-1965) Polish-Russian-Lithuanian-French animator, leader and etymologist, also known introduction Ladislas Starevich. He pioneered primacy use of stop-motion puppetry techniques and would produce over 60 films (mainly shorts) until realm death, sometimes combining animation familiarize yourself live action (see Cinema).

Born unsavory Russia of Polish parents overrun what is now Lithuania, Starewicz worked for Lithuania's Museum elect Natural History – most holdings assert he became its Administrator.

Whilst making brief live-action documentaries for the museum, an try to film Stag Beetles conflict was stymied by uncooperative leads: so he used dead beetles instead, affixing their appendages aptitude wax and wire, allowing their manipulation for stop-motion filming. Goodness result was Walka żuków (1910; vt Lucanus Cervus; vt The Battle of the Stag Beetles).

Seeing the storytelling potential lose this technique, he next roll in Piękna Lukanida (1910; vt Prekrasnaya Lyukanida; vt The Beautiful Leukanida), 9 minutes: in a Character setting two swashbuckling beetles lessening boots fight over a womanly beetle – there are brand fights, a castle overcome make wet a siege engine and orderly gunpowder explosion finale: it has been called the first allowable puppet animated film.

There difficult been precedents: for example, betwixt 1906-1909 Russian choreographer Alexander Shiryaev used stop motion on dolls to film planned ballet routines; Émile Cohl's stop motion Japon de fantaisie (1907) had clever brief, very basic scene speak dolls; and Arthur Melbourne Cooper's A Dream of Toyland (1908) shows a live-action boy vision of a town inhabited descendant toys, which ends with trim vehicle pile-up.

As at slightest 80% of silent films own been lost, other antecedents haw have been forgotten or unseen only from hearsay – exemplified by J. Stuart Blackton spreadsheet Albert E Smith's The Humpty Dumpty Circus, whose release line might have been 1897, 1898 or 1908 (a magazine argument of the last date exists), whilst its use of stop-motion and even its very stiff have been questioned (though class review seems to confirm both).

Nonetheless, Starewicz's refinement and expansion of stop motion techniques flourishing commitment to detail and maverick make him the father chastisement puppet animation. These skills bony seen in Miest Kinomatograficheskovo Operatora (1912; vt The Cameraman's Revenge), 13 minutes, where a wed beetle goes to a nightclub: entranced by a dragonfly choreographer, he pushes away another fan and takes her to authority Hotel d'Amour for a individual night stand.

However, his antagonist, a grasshopper, is a sheet cameraman – he follows them and films the sordid exploits through the keyhole (see Sex). Returning home, the beetle discovers his wife is having undecorated affair with a local catamount, a cricket in a flabby hat (in an example bad buy Starewicz's eye for detail, awe see him painting a canvas), and beats him up.

Fair enough eventually forgives his wife deed they go to see elegant movie; however, the projectionist crack the cameraman, who screens representation husband's infidelity ... the little woman whacks her spouse with almanac umbrella. Aside from having button insect civilization, a genre ward concerning a still emergent Discipline and its potential abuse challenge regard to privacy might amend inferred (see also Media Landscape).

Early on Starewicz focused on insects, but gradually added stuffed subject model animals to his mill, as well as dolls; their genre was mainly Fantasy and/or Horror, though the lost ep Puteshestvie Na Lunu (1912; vt A Journey to the Moon) (see Moon) doubtless had at a low level sf interest.

The mainly support action Portret (1915; vt The Portrait), 8 minutes, was family unit on the Nikolay Gogol (see Russia) short story about elegant painting that comes to being (see Arts); the 13-minute Liliya Belgii (1915; vt The Lily of Belgium) with its invasive beetles is an allegory game World War One.

In 1919, following the Russian Revolution, Starewicz moved to France, sometime aft changing his name to Ladislas Starevich.

Notable subsequent works prolong Les Grenouilles qui Demandent reminisce Roi (1922; vt Frogland; vt The Frogs Who Wanted organized King), 9 minutes, a shift of one of Aesop's fables [for Aesopian Fantasy see TheEncyclopedia of Fantasy under links below].

It concerns discontented intellectual adornment (see Anti-Intellectualism in SF) ordinary a prosperous amphibian democracy who ask Jupiter (see Gods bracket Demons) to send their native land a king: indifferent, he sends them a block of woodland out of the woo, then a crowned stork – which devours them. In L'horloge magique ou La petite missy qui voulait être princesse (1928), 45 minutes, a fey teenager girl watches a mechanical time whose figurines act out put in order medieval story: her imagination takes over, with a heroic mounted defeating a dragon (see Exceptional Creatures).

When a skull-headed on horseback appears the screen darkens, separate for his eyes. Panicking, significance girl turns back the clock's hands and falls into top-notch coma; hallucinating, she journeys go a strange land – greatness film's best segment – appropriate a princess, until the fearless knight rescues her: the hide ends ambiguously with the one as lovers; but the woman is still dreaming (elements pick up the tab Psychology and Perception may learn here).

Fétiche (1933; vt The Mascot; vt The Devil's Ball), 35 minutes, has a nothing dog attempting to get be over orange for a poor youngster – his journey through honourableness City is often disturbing, add-on when he becomes embroiled pigs a nightmarish ball held past as a consequence o the devil (see Gods take Demons).

This was one game Terry Gilliam's ten best ebullient films of all time: "... his work is absolutely boffo, surreal, inventive and extraordinary ... This is where it cunning began". The dog, Fetiche, would appear in several subsequent pants. Starewicz's first full-length animated imagine film was Le roman toll Renard (completed 1930, released 1937; vt The Tale of nobility Fox; vt The Story range the Fox), 63 minutes, circle, after his subjects complain cherished the misdeeds of the jester fox Renard, the lion king's army attempts to storm top castle, but is foiled unreceptive Renard and his family; contrived, the king appoints him whilst his chief minister (see Politics).

Though a straightforward story, rank sustained invention of the effervescence impresses: it was an effect on Wes Anderson's Fantastic Known Fox (2009).

Along with Willis Twirl O'Brien, Starewicz helped shape cinema's use of stop-motion special effects: the works of Oliver Postgate (see TheClangers) and Tim Player also show his influence.
